The Fall of the House of Usher

The house in " The Fall of the house of Usher" is described as being melancholy and desolate. It is a classic haunted house. It is an old house of people who were at one time rich but over the years let the house become rank. In the story Roderick and the narrator read stories and play the guitar to cheer Roderick up. Usher's sister "dies" one day and is temporarily put into the family tomb. One day there is a terrible storm so the narrator reads Roderick a story, everything in the story starts happening around them. Then shockingly all the noise in the house and comes to them when the sister comes through the door still alive. She then falls on her brother and they both fall to the floor as corpses. Then the house breaks in two and sinks into the tarn. "but with the first glimpse of the building , a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit". I like this quote because it shows the attitude and first impression of the narrator towards the house.
