Ms. Found in a Bottle

Describe the disasters recounted in the story. Why is the device of reading a message in a bottle popular? Why is this message successful in keeping the reader's interest? Add your favorite quote.

The first disaster is the tempest that the narrator and the boat he is on. The crank boat capsized and he and a Swede are the only survivors. The narrator and the Swede float on pieces of the broken boat. Another storm begins and this brings the narrator to another boat. He is thrown into the crew and soon goes to the captains cabin to explore. The narrator views the captain with great reverence, although the captain cannot see him. The narrator finds a manuscript in the captain's quarters. The final disaster that is experienced in the story is at the end when another tempest beings and descents the ship to the bottom of the ocean. The device of reading a message in a bottle is popular because it allows anyone to read the note that is enshrouded in the bottle. The messages are successful in keeping the reader's interest because it is unknown who it is sent to. My favorite quote is "The circles rapidly growing small-we are plunging madly within the grasp of the whirlpool-and amid a roaring, and bellowing, and thundering of ocean and tempest, the ship is quivering-oh God!- and going down!" I liked this quote because it is a great conclusion to the story.
