The narrator of the story leaves Java on a cargo ship. Days into the voyage a simoon hits the crank ship capsizing it throwing everyone off board and killing them. The ship went through a precipitous whirlpool. The remaining of the ship was enshrouded by darkness. The only two survivors were the narrator and a Swedish man. The two men float on the shattered ship for days until they find a gigantic black ship which they go on. The narrator sees how the people on the ship speak an unrecognizable language. The narrator goes into the captain’s cabin where he finds a paper for a manuscript. The narrator seals the manuscript into a glass bottle and throws it into the sea. The narrator can't be seen by anyone on the ship or even the captain. This is eerie. The narrator sees a hidden word on the ship which says DISCOVERY. At that moment the ship reached Antarctica where they hit an iceberg and the ship got girted by a tempest. Everyone on the ship were deluged.
