MS. Found in a Bottle

A boat was out in the middle of the ocean that was completely taken over by a massive whirl pool and only the narrator and one other guy survived it. They sent out a message in a bottle which a reliable way to get help. The message written inside a bottle is usually an SOS call to land and the message will not get wet or damaged because you have to seal off the bottle. The reader can stay entertained by this because the reader gets the thrill of the life or death situation all depending on if someone receives the bottle.

"The sun arose with a sickly yellow luster, and clambered a very few degrees above the horizon-emitting no decisive light." pg. 273 & 275

It's the random encounter and finding out someone else's secret cry for help in a bottle that appeals to everyone.
